The Impossible Messiah: Why There Can Never Be a Messiah

For thousands of years, humanity has waited for someone to come and put the world right.Jews wait for Moshiach. Christians wait for Jesus to return. Muslims have their own expectations of final deliverance. But there is a question rarely asked: Could anyone actually do the job?Could one man end war? Establish universal justice? Bring humanity to recognition of God? Create a peaceful world that remains peaceful forever? And what happens when billions of other human beings remain free to disagree? The Impossible Messiah examines the ancient promise of the Messiah, the people who claimed or were believed to fulfil it, the transformation of Jesus from Jewish Messiah to divine saviour, and the enduring expectation that someone will eventually bring history to its promised conclusion. The investigation leads to a provocative possibility: Perhaps the problem is not that the right Messiah has never appeared. Perhaps the job itself is impossible.
