No Clan in the Highlands of Scotland was more proud of its ancient name than the MacGregors, and no Clan suffered more for their name or was more cruelly forced to abandon it. But throughout all their persecution they maintained their Clan identity and, in secret, kept the name MacGregor. Clan MacGregor claim a royal origin from Grigor, third son of Alpin, King of Dalriada and brother to King Kenneth MacAlpin. The Clan helped to forge the Kingdom of Scotland and then fought with William Wallace and King Robert the Bruce to defend the independence of Scotland as a separate nation. They bore the brunt of the rise of Clan Campbell and suffered from the ambitious lust and ambition of other Clans for their lands and estates. Despite being persecuted by the Stewart Kings, Clan MacGregor remained strong supporters of this dynasty and were ardent Jacobites during the rebellions of the 17th and 18th centuries. They suffered for this loyalty and were eventually driven out of their remaining lands and scattered all over the world. This book gives a detailed account of the Clan from their ancient beginings to the modern day, using information gathered from a large number of historic documents and charters, giving the reader an in-depth knowledge of the ancestry of Clan MacGregor.
