The Half Moon Hotel is a work of historical fiction set largely at Coney Island between Saturday, November 8, 1941, and Wednesday, November 12, 1941. It combines the atmosphere of a noir mystery with historical events, interesting characters, and an unusually strong architectural narrator: the decaying Half Moon Hotel itself. Parallel tensions develop around Abe "Kid Twist" Reles, a protected witness against Murder Inc., and the enigmatic J. C. Ross, whose refined manners, knowledge of music and Latin, discreet movements, and possible criminal identity make him appear connected to the danger surrounding the hotel. The narrative ends as detectives begin investigating Reles's death, leaving the question of accident, suicide, or murder unresolved.
