THE GREAT COMMISSION The Great Commission is not an appendix to Matthew. It is the destination. Everything in the Gospel, the birth narratives, the Sermon on the Mount, the miracles, the parables, the confrontations with the Pharisees, the Passion narrative, the resurrection, all of it has been pointing here. The risen Christ stands on a mountain in Galilee, and He gives the church its marching orders for the rest of human history. We need to take that seriously. This is not a suggestion. This is not an option available to those with a particular personality type or a taste for adventure. The Great Commission is a commission in the most military and official sense of the word. It is a charge given by the highest authority in the universe to every person who calls themselves a follower of Jesus. And understanding it well is not a luxury. It is a necessity.
