The Grammar of Perishing

Someone is dying in the room, and everything has been prepared except an answer. The medicine is good, the law is careful, and the words of comfort are kind. Only the question the room asks has nowhere to be received: What, exactly, is about to happen, and to whom? The modern settlement holds two doctrines about that room. The first is biological, and this book says not one word against it: the organism ceases. The second is quieter, carried beneath the first: the self that seemed to stand before death was never a self at all. Between them they can name a cessation and dispel an illusion. Neither can speak of perishing; the third thing the mourner has always known was there. The Grammar of Perishing recovers the language the age mislaid. It is carried in a pair of Qurʾānic participles, fānin and hālik: everything is perishing, now, in the present tense. And it is answered by a single clause, illā wajhah: except His Face. Reading Whitehead's perpetual perishing against Mullā Ṣadrā's soul that subsists, and both against the tradition's doctrine of the Face, the book relocates rather than refutes, honouring what biology completes and what process philosophy secures while restoring what neither can say. It keeps its last promise by refusing to say what the dying sees. To the one who keeps the vigil, it offers not a picture, but a grammar.
