The Future of Higher Education

Colleges and universities are confronting one of the most disruptive periods in modern history. Enrollment declines, financial pressures, changing student expectations, workforce disruption, rising student mental health needs, and the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence are reshaping the foundations of higher education. The Future of Higher Education: Strategic Leadership for Academic Transformation examines these intersecting forces and offers a clear framework for navigating institutional change. Drawing on nearly two decades of leadership experience across public and private institutions, Eric Klein, PhD, presents actionable strategies that help academic leaders move beyond reactive crisis management toward thoughtful, mission-driven transformation.Organized around understanding the landscape, leading through change, and adapting to the future, the book addresses the challenges confronting provosts, deans, department chairs, and senior administrators. Each chapter integrates current research, real-world leadership experience, and practical tools that support strategic planning, decision-making, and institutional innovation. As colleges and universities redefine their role in a rapidly evolving society, The Future of Higher Education provides a forward-looking road map for leaders committed to sustaining institutional relevance, strengthening student outcomes, and shaping the future of higher education.
