The Frost In Your Eyes

Britain, AD 163. At the edge of the empire, a Roman officer finds a dying woman in the snow - and cannot explain to himself why he saves her.Hadrian's Wall marks where order ends and the north begins: eighty Roman miles of stone holding back the tribes no legion could ever take. Livius, prefect of Cilurnum, commands six hundred auxiliaries and believes one thing above all - that without Rome there is only chaos. Riding back from a winter patrol, he finds a woman dying in the snow. She is one of them. He carries her back with him, and cannot say why. She will not speak. She will not eat. And when at last she looks at him, there is nothing in her eyes but frost. What grows between them will cost more than either of them can pay - and the wall built to keep the world out will keep out nothing at all. A novel of the Roman frontier: of duty, of the price of mercy, and of a love that neither Rome nor the north will forgive. Content note: this novel contains references to sexual violence. Nothing is depicted on the page.
