The Four Rivers of Paradise

Why does paradise have four rivers? Not three. Not seven. In Genesis, one river leaves Eden and divides into four. In the Quran, the righteous are promised rivers of water, milk, honey, and wine. A Norse creation myth - with no contact with either - feeds the newborn world from a cow whose udders run four rivers of milk. India preserves four paths to one liberation. The alchemists ripened four metals in one furnace. The Tao counts four greats. None of them consulted the others. All of them counted to four. The Four Rivers of Paradise proposes that the number does not come from the landscape. It comes from you. Every night the heart composes in a language of pictures - houses and floods, animals and roads, gardens and walls - and the oldest books in the world are written in that same language. This book assembles the grammar one word at a time: the house that is a self. The serpent that is attention. The teeth that are assumptions, tested at the bite. The stone that is memory, and the sword that is forged from it. The frozen well. The golden seams. The mercy seat, and the room no one else can enter with you. Then it reads - the Bible and the Quran side by side, with the Tao Te Ching, the sagas of the north, the myths of Greece, India, Ireland, and the Americas, the notebooks of the alchemists, and the vessels of the Kabbalah standing behind them as witnesses. Where the traditions differ, the differences are left standing - met not as barriers, but as bridges. At the center of it all: four loves, four ways two people can stand, and one water that was never four things at all. This book is for the person in whom the heart and the mind have been at war - who was made to feel, somewhere along the way, that love and logic are rivals and a serious life requires picking a side. They were never rivals. They are two realms joined by a single tree, and the deeper the roots go and the higher the branches reach, the more that tree becomes a tree of life. Nothing in these pages asks to be believed on authority. It asks to be weighed. Begin thirsty.
