the Fly and Pestle: Jataka Tale Rhymes: 45

A simple request for help becomes a moment of terrible consequence when Rohini sees flies tormenting her elderly mother. Determined to protect the woman she loves, she reaches for the nearest weapon and acts before wisdom has time to guide her hand. When news of the tragedy reaches the Buddha at Jetavana, he reveals that this sorrow has happened before. Long ago in Benares, another Rohini faced the same choice, made the same reckless decision, and left a wise treasurer to judge what her good intentions had caused. This unforgettable Jātaka tale explores the danger of foolish assistance, the weight of impulsive action, and the painful truth that affection alone cannot make a decision wise. Through two lives bound by the same mistake, readers discover why a sensible enemy may sometimes cause less harm than a devoted friend without judgment.
