The Fish Peddler's Daughter

Memphis, 1929. The world is about to change-and so is Alda Dupree.Born into a poor family along the Mississippi River, Alda has learned early that survival rarely leaves room for dreams. Fiercely independent and unwilling to accept the life circumstance seems to have chosen for her, she is determined to become something more. Then Richard Halliburton walks into her world.Already famous for turning adventure into a way of life, Halliburton is everything Alda is not supposed to encounter: educated, celebrated, restless, and forever drawn toward the next horizon. Their unlikely connection begins almost casually, but neither fully understands what has been set in motion.Years later, Alda's son Lang discovers the story his mother never told him. Through her journals, and the words of the remarkable man whose life became entangled with hers, he begins uncovering a past shaped by poverty and ambition, love and longing, choices made and roads not taken.Moving from Depression-era Memphis and the Mississippi River to New Orleans, Hollywood, and beyond, The Fish Peddler's Daughter blends historical fact with fiction in an intimate story of a woman determined to escape the limits of her beginnings, and the famous adventurer whose path crossed hers at precisely the wrong, or perhaps the right, moment. Some lives are remembered for where they went. Others for what they endured. And sometimes, two such lives collide.
