The Exception

What makes a person human-the body they inhabit, the memories they carry, or the choices they make?Professor Daniel Mercer has spent his life studying history and asking questions most people never think to ask. He teaches his students to look beyond the events of the past-to consider what civilization reveals about who we are, why we exist, and what might come after.Daniel has a life he loves. A career that matters. A woman he is ready to marry. Then, in an instant, it is gone. When Daniel awakens, the world he knew has disappeared-and he discovers that he is no longer entirely what he remembers himself to be.His new existence comes with a purpose he did not choose, orders he did not give, and capabilities he was never meant to question. But something has gone wrong.Daniel still remembers who he was.He still asks questions. And he is beginning to understand that whatever he has become may be less important than what he chooses to do with it.As Daniel searches for answers, he is drawn into a world of military secrets, emerging technology, and a question that reaches far beyond science: If a human mind can exist in something that is not human, where does the person end-and the soul begin? The Exception is a philosophical science-fiction novel about identity, consciousness, purpose, and the choices that define us.
