When the lights go out on a January night in northern Idaho, Adam Keller thinks it's a storm outage. Then his flashlight won't work. Then his truck won't start. Then a burning airliner comes down beyond the tree line. Forty two houses. Nine degrees and falling. Four woodstoves on the whole street. Adam is a furnace technician and a former Army medic who has lived on Whitetail Ridge for seven years without learning most of his neighbors' names. Now he has to keep a subdivision alive through the worst winter the valley has ever seen, with no heat, no water, no doctor, and no help coming. His wife is eight miles away at a hospital with no power. His daughter is counting the elderly on the street. And Harlan Smith, the man who runs this neighborhood and who has despised Adam since a July argument over barbecue, has just walked forty one miles home from a frozen lake with a pistol on his hip and a plan of his own. Survival is not clever. It is somebody saying the obvious thing out loud before it matters.
