The Day Hermes Quit

When Hermes finally quits, the modern world doesn't lose a myth. It loses the invisible force that makes anything arrive where it is supposed to go. Phone calls connect to strangers. Emails land in the wrong inboxes. GPS sends drivers miles off course. Bank transfers vanish into the wrong accounts. Packages, messages, transactions, and travelers all begin slipping toward the wrong destinations. In Dallas, twenty-three-year-old Tier 1 tech-support worker Kyle Hayes is one of the first people to notice the pattern: the machines still work. The problem begins only when something has to go somewhere else. A few frantic hours later, Kyle escapes to the rooftop for a cigarette and gets the surprise of his life when Iris, goddess of the rainbow, appears in front of him carrying Hermes's winged cap. Hermes has walked away from his divine office, Iris is drowning under the abandoned workload, and the world has less than twenty-four hours before the damage becomes permanent. Kyle is sent to Corfu to recover the other half of the office: Hermes's winged sandals, hidden in plain sight where ordinary people cannot see them. He expects to find a way to drag Hermes back to work. Instead, he finds the retired god on a beach, sunglasses on, toes in the water, drink in hand, and absolutely no intention of returning. Now Kyle has to decide whether saving the world means convincing Hermes to come back... or becoming the next Hermes himself.
