The Dark Part-Time Job: A Tokyo Crime Novel

The job sounded easy. The money was real. Getting out was the part nobody mentioned.Twenty-one-year-old Minato Koba is running out of options. His family's business has collapsed, bills are piling up, and ordinary work isn't paying enough. Then a message arrives offering same-day cash for simple delivery jobs. No experience. No interview. No questions. At first, the work feels almost harmless: drive a van, wait, collect a package, get paid. But each job pulls Minato one step deeper into a criminal network that knows far more about him than it should.By the time he realizes what he has become part of, the people behind the messages know where he lives, where his sister goes to school, and exactly what he is afraid to lose.Detective Kenji Horie has seen young recruits like Minato before: disposable couriers at the bottom of an anonymous, constantly shifting organization whose leaders remain almost impossible to reach. Now Minato faces a choice between continuing, running, or trusting the very system he has spent weeks trying to avoid. The Dark Part-Time Job is a tense contemporary crime novel about financial desperation, coercion, family, guilt, and the machinery that turns ordinary people into replaceable pieces of organized crime. The novel is fictional, but its premise is loosely inspired by Japan's widely reported yami baito, or "dark part-time job," crime phenomenon.
