The Cyrene Conspiracy

A war in Gaza. An ancient Christian fragment. A secret that could challenge two thousand years of history. As war consumes Gaza, writer Amir Zane is approached by a Palestinian Christian carrying an ancient Syriac fragment rescued from a community whose history is disappearing along with its people.Four words are written on it:Not him, but another.Amir's search for their meaning leads him from Boston to Alexandria, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and the ancient monasteries of the Holy Land. Along the way, he uncovers forgotten Christian texts and accounts pointing toward a startling possibility:The man crucified at Golgotha may not have been Jesus. The name that keeps appearing is Simon of Cyrene. What begins as an investigation into an obscure religious tradition soon becomes something far more dangerous. Amir is watched. People connected to his investigation disappear. Ancient sites and the people protecting them come under threat. And behind it all, Amir begins to see the outlines of a modern struggle over an ancient story.Because the mystery is no longer simply about what happened in Jerusalem two thousand years ago.It is about why a forgotten Christian tradition so closely resembles one of Islam's most controversial claims about Jesus, and what that could mean in a land still divided by religion, politics, and war.
