The Color of Lies

In 1970 New Orleans, Dr. Simone Baptiste begins every morning by making herself look white. It is the price she has chosen to pay for a surgical career in a medical system that would close its doors if it saw her clearly. Precision is her armor; respectability is survival. But the mask becomes harder to hold when the patients she protects, the people of Tremé, and a wounded stranger named Zeke pull her toward the Black Creole history she has spent years keeping at a careful distance. As hospital politics, public ambition, rootwork, and family memory begin to converge, Simone must decide how much of herself she can erase before the life she built stops being hers. The Color of Lies is an African American historical novel about medicine, passing, Black Creole identity, ancestral knowledge, and the dangerous distance between being accepted and being known.
