The Bat Between: Murder of Steven Schulhof

The Bat Between: The Murder of Steven SchulhoffA father was murdered. His teenage daughter blamed her boyfriend. But that was only the first story. In February 2004, forty-eight-year-old Steven Schulhoff was beaten to death inside his Altamonte Springs, Florida, apartment with an aluminum Louisville Slugger. Attention quickly turned to two people close to the events surrounding his death: his sixteen-year-old daughter, Courtney Schulhoff, and her older boyfriend, Michael Morin. Both had information about what happened that night. But their accounts did not fit neatly together.Courtney initially pointed investigators toward Morin. Morin gave detectives an account of his own. Investigators also had the apartment itself-the blood, the weapon, the forensic evidence, and the circumstances surrounding Steven's final hours. Then the case went to court.A conviction appeared to provide an answer. It didn't.Before the second prosecution was over, the case would take an extraordinary turn. An account investigators and prosecutors had spent years examining would be challenged from within, forcing another jury to confront a disturbing question: what had really happened inside Steven Schulhoff's bedroom? The Bat Between follows the case from the troubled relationship preceding Steven's death through the killing, investigation, conflicting statements, two prosecutions, and the courtroom development that transformed the case.Linda Davidson separates documented evidence from allegation, recorded statements from later testimony, and legal guilt from what can actually be established about the fatal attack.Because two people would ultimately be convicted of Steven Schulhoff's murder. But a conviction could not make the bat speak.Who swung it?
