This is the third book in the series. America has descended into a brutal civil war, Civil War II. Four retired men must navigate aging, their pasts, and the violence around them, while taking care of Joey, an orphaned ten-year-old boy. Raised by fathers who fought in World War II, these Baby Boomers (people born between 1946 and 1964) came of age during the Civil Rights Movement, rock and roll music, long hair, the drug culture, hippies, Women's Liberation Movement, the sexual revolution, political assassinations, protests, the Vietnam War, the Generation Gap, Nixon and Watergate, and they were the first generation to grow up with television. Although they grew up together, their adult lives diverged. Billy made the military his career. Jan became a priest. Mallard taught history at a small college.
