The Ancient Highway

Set against the forests and rivers of Quebec and Ontario, this novel follows Clifton Brant, a man scarred by war and searching for meaning along the open road. As he retraces the paths of his youth, he encounters a neglected boy and his dog, whose friendship changes the course of his wandering. Their travels carry them into landscapes marked by memory, loss, and the promise of renewal, with echoes of an older history embedded in the land itself. Through encounters with both allies and threats, Clifton confronts questions of justice, loyalty, and the debts of the past. Curwood blends wilderness adventure with deep reflection on heritage, resilience, and the ties that connect generations. The novel captures both the sweep of nature's grandeur and the inner journey of a man at a crossroads, making it one of Curwood's most thoughtful later works.
