The Adjacent Room

The Adjacent RoomEvery house has its weather systems - the throat-clear that means an ordinary day, the silence that means wait. She has spent her whole life reading them, learning exactly how much of herself is safe to let into a room. Then something else starts reading the weather too. Something that lives just behind her, in the room adjacent to the one she lets everyone see - built, she comes to understand, from six years of anger she was never once allowed to feel out loud. At first it only watches. Then it starts acting on her behalf, in ways she cannot take back and does not remember choosing.By the time a classmate nearly drowns, and a therapist disappears, and a courtroom asks her - under oath - whose hands did this, she no longer has a simple answer. The Adjacent Room is her account, written in the one place she still controls: the truth, on the page, before anyone else decides what it means. It is a confession, a defense, and a reckoning with the question at the center of every family that runs on silence - what happens to a feeling that is never given anywhere to go.A gripping, unflinching novel about repression, complicity, and the parts of ourselves we disown until they can no longer be ignored.
