The 80s

British photography in the 1980s is explored through a lens of social and political change, tracing how the era shaped art in the UK and beyond. Rather than a comprehensive history, the publication highlights more than 70 lens-based artists and a constellation of image makers, photography journals, collectives, and theorists active in and around the Thatcher era (1976–1993). It pays particular attention to the intersection with the British Black arts movement and to theoretical developments in photography and representation from postmodern and cultural theory perspectives.
