It is argued that humans are not only animals that make technology, but also animals made by technology. Nothing in history, it is proposed, makes sense except in the light of technology. It is contended that a technological perspective provides a satisfying and inclusive account of where we came from, who and what we are, and the various contingent futures that may face us. Taking a universal view, technology is presented as a basic feature of nature, necessarily central to the evolution and history of intelligent beings, whenever and wherever in the cosmos they might arise.
