Told largely by Ladakhis themselves, and compiled by the primary author in the course of several journeys with her two Ladakhi co-authors, who are rangers for Hemis National Park, the Tales illustrate contemporary life of Ladakhis and snow leopards in the Park. The purposes of the Tales include: support the conservation of Hemis National Park (in Ladakh, India); contribute information on the natural history of the snow leopard; preserve Ladakhi traditional stories and songs related to the Park that are at risk of being lost; and provide an example for other parks of how their human and non-human populations could approach living together sustainably.
