Symphonie Disharmonica is a fascinating collection: deeply personal, but always outward looking; rich with imagery, but shatteringly descriptive. Mukund Gnanadesikan has structured this symphonic collection in four movements, imbuing the collection with a rigorous cohesion which belies the 'Disharmonica' of the title. His subject matter, however, delivers the promise of the title: a majestic frenzy of the discord and savagery he sees around him. There is little in the human world that suggests hope, and yet the symphony closes with the gentle promise of the natural world, battered but undefeated. As the final notes sound, stand and applaud this remarkable poetic achievement.
