Stories For The Young

Stories for the young or cheap repository tracts is a moral and religious tract collection designed to provide instructive reading for general audiences with a strong focus on ethical behaviour and social guidance. The work presents simple narratives and ballads that promote virtues such as honesty, diligence, self-discipline, and moral responsibility while discouraging harmful habits like gambling alcohol abuse and idleness. It reflects a broader effort to reshape popular reading culture by offering accessible literature intended to guide moral conduct and reinforce religious values. The collection was created as an alternative to popular entertainment literature that was viewed as morally questionable and aimed to influence readers through clear didactic storytelling. It played a significant role in early movements of social and moral reform by promoting education through inexpensive widely distributed texts. Its influence extends across religious literature, moral instruction, educational writing, social reform literature, and popular didactic storytelling traditions.
