Somber City

Coming of age in a Nigeria alive with music, politics, ambition, friendship, and restless possibility, Femi "Flash" Falashe moves from the strict boarding-school lawns of Ibadan to the electric freedom of university life in Lagos with wit, hope, and the companionship of unforgettable friends-George, the anxious loyalist, and James Peregrino, the brilliant, rebellious musician whose dangerous charisma will haunt Femi for the rest of his life. But adulthood is less forgiving than memory. Marriage, children, money troubles, unstable business ventures, loan sharks, social expectation, and the harsh machinery of Lagos begin to close around Femi. The city that once promised glamour and adventure becomes a place of exhaustion, debt, humiliation, and fear. As his confidence erodes, a darker voice rises within him: the Monster, whispering suspicion, despair, and ruin.Set against the shifting landscape of postcolonial Nigeria, Somber City is a richly layered literary novel about friendship, masculinity, marriage, mental strain, and the quiet ways ordinary people break under the weight of survival. With humor, nostalgia, and emotional depth, Rotimi Ogunjobi tells the story of one man's long struggle to understand how bright beginnings can lead into shadow-and whether love, memory, and courage can still offer a way back.
