Social Media Monsters: How to Survive Creeps with Keyboards

Online harassment rarely stays online. It can follow a person into their career, relationships, reputation, finances, health, and everyday life.Social Media Monsters: How to Survive Creeps with Keyboards examines the behavior, psychology, tactics, and consequences of cyber-hatred, with particular attention to adult professionals who become targets of sustained online attacks.Drawing on research, case material, professional experience, and the author's own encounter with cyber-hatred, Mozelle Martin explores how online hostility develops and why certain individuals and groups become willing participants in harassment, public shaming, impersonation, doxxing, cyberstalking, mobbing, reputation attacks, and other forms of digital aggression. The book begins with an extensive A-Z guide to terminology used in online abuse and digital culture, then examines common types of cyber-haters, the tactics they employ, the psychology behind their behavior, and the ways online conflict can escalate when groups, creators, and audiences reinforce one another.Social Media Monsters also addresses the experience of the target. It examines boundaries, evidence preservation, reasons victims may hesitate to pursue legal action, practical survival strategies, online safety, critical thinking, digital citizenship, and resources for people trying to protect themselves without becoming consumed by the attack.Case studies, research, references, personal reflection, and practical tools are combined with occasional sarcasm and visual commentary to make a difficult subject accessible without minimizing its consequences. For professionals, content creators, educators, advocates, and anyone dealing with sustained online hostility, Social Media Monsters offers both an examination of the problem and a practical framework for recognizing, documenting, confronting, and surviving cyber-hatred.
