Bol Pandit Bhallamudi Seetaram Murty, a celebrated scholar in Sanskrit, Telugu, and Hindi, was a prolific voice in classical literature. His 1955 work, Sharanarthini, marked a groundbreaking shift in classical Telugu poetry (kavya). Rejecting traditional mythological subjects, Murty chose instead to chronicle the harrowing, tragic journey of a single refugee woman during the 1947 Partition of India. The Refugee brings this profound exploration of trauma and displacement to the English-speaking world. Translated by Bhallamudi Sriramasankara Prasad, this volume beautifully bridges past and present, offering a hauntingly beautiful perspective on one of history's most defining human tragedies.
