RUBY: Faith, Family Vlogging, and the Abuse Behind Brand

A mother. A camera. A family brand. A closed door.Ruby Franke built an audience by turning motherhood into content. As the face of the family YouTube channel 8 Passengers, she presented a home defined by faith, discipline, order, and moral certainty. Millions watched. Some admired her. Some worried. Few could see what was happening once the cameras moved away.In 2023, Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt were arrested after one of Ruby's children escaped Hildebrandt's Utah home and sought help from a neighbour. The criminal case that followed exposed severe abuse, a controlling belief system, and the dangerous collision of family vlogging, religious language, therapeutic authority, and parental power.Ruby: Faith, Family Vlogging, and the Abuse Behind the Brand is a careful, factual account of how a public image collapsed into a criminal case. It traces Ruby's rise as a parenting influencer, her partnership with Hildebrandt and ConneXions, the evidence revealed after the rescue, the court proceedings, and the wider reckoning around child influencers, faith, authority, and family privacy.Written with restraint and respect for the surviving children, this book does not treat their suffering as spectacle. Instead, it asks the harder question left behind by the case: How can a family be watched by millions, yet still leave children unseen?
