Bol Leaving her abusive and alcoholic husband, Rose Hanlon built a new life in 19th century New England. Her courage, ingenuity and determination provided her with the skills to raise two young daughters in an atmosphere of mistrust and poverty. When the potato rot engulfed the country, the Irish people were reduced to abject poverty and ultimately death. Any Irish people of means had their land confiscated and were sent to live as they could. Rebels were tried, convicted and either hanged or sent to Australian prisons. Humdreds of starving Irish escaped the famine by sailing to America or Canada. The ships they sailed on were called death ships due to disease and unsanitary conditions. Rose Hanlon was a survivor of the famine, death ship crossing and predjudice in her new home. Rose coped with poverty while raising a family in hostile conditions. This novel is based loosely on my greatgrandmother who crated a life of dignity for her family. I am proud to be a descendent of such a woman.
