In November 1766, Adélaïde is eighteen, pregnant, and abandoned by her lover the Baron de Baumesnil. She would have been swiftly locked away in a convent by her father had it not been for her talents as a musician that allowed her to enter the Royal Academy of Music where women were under the sole authority of the King. She immediately replaces the great Sophie Arnold and triumphs under the name "Mademoiselle Baumesnil", hoping to attract the attention of her lost love. This hope sustains her through the daily life of the academy, Sophie's jealousy, rivalries, manipulation and staying in the favor of her protectors... The Duc de Chartres is charmed by Adélaïde and soon she is carrying his child. However all her hopes are shattered with the arrival of Glück at the Opera and his ambitions to revolutionize lyrical art. She loses the baby, the baron pushes her away and her Professor ignores her. To find the strength to pick herself up, Adelaide turns to the one thing she always knew she could do: compose music.
