Spring 1953. A brutal double murder sends shock waves through the sleepy town of Mill Valley, California. Marin County Sheriff's Inspector Nick Sterling is drawn into a web of conspiracy and intrigue that reaches beyond local government and deep into the workings of the FBI and the Communist Party. As Sterling searches for clues, a likely suspect is found murdered in a similar way to the first killings. Dealing with pressure from superiors to apprehend a possible serial killer before townsfolk panic, Nick digs deeper and discovers all three victims were members of the Communist Party. In no time, Sterling senses he is not alone on the trail. He learns that a disgraced member of J. Edgar Hoover's band of zealots, known as the Red Hounds, is shadowing Nick. Clearly, there is more to this case than a string of senseless murders.
