Bol Paul's letter to Philemon is proof that good things do come in small packages. This brief letter of request is in reality a powerful lesson in grace, reconciliation, and discipleship. However, a proper understanding of Philemon requires a background in first-century slavery as well as linkages to the words of Jesus and other letters of Paul. In Receive Him as Me, Hal Wilson Jr. uses a fictional backstory and clear connections to other New Testament passages to mine the gold that is under the surface of this letter. With these tools, the letter is seen as not just a startling first-century request but a timeless application of practical grace with special pertinence to us in the twenty-first century. In addition, as Paul instructed his converts to follow his example, we also can learn from his methods of loving persuasion and accountability displayed in this letter. Be prepared to read Philemon anew and see the enormous heart of the gospel bursting forth from a very small package.
