The work is divided into two volumes, each containing fifteen rhyme categories. The upper volume covers the following fifteen rhyme categories in order: East, Winter, River, Branch, Micro, Fish, Yu, Qi, Excellent, Ash, True, Literary, Yuan, Cold, and Delete. The lower volume covers: First, Xiao, Delicious, Majestic, Song, Hemp, Sunny, Geng, Azure, Steam, Especially, Invasion, Tan, Salt, and Salty.Under each rhyme category, there are three sets of couplet passages, each following the same format-consisting of ten pairs of parallel phrases and eight rhymed endings. The rhyme words selected in The Enlightenment of Rhyme are all common characters from their respective rhyme categories, frequently used in classical poetry and prose.
