Proximity Fuze: The Invisible Revolution in Warfare

In Proximity Fuze: The Invisible Revolution in Warfare, Stephen Carrington tells the story of one of the most important yet least visible technological breakthroughs of the Second World War. Hidden inside an artillery shell, the proximity fuze transformed anti-aircraft and artillery fire by solving a deceptively difficult problem: determining exactly when a shell should explode. Developed under extraordinary secrecy, it became the product of scientific ingenuity, precision engineering, industrial mobilization, and close cooperation between researchers, manufacturers, and the Allied armed forces. Drawing on wartime records, technical histories, operational reports, and official accounts, Carrington follows the proximity fuze from early experiments with radio sensing to the challenge of building miniature electronics capable of surviving the violent acceleration of a gun barrel. He explores the race to manufacture millions of reliable fuzes, their closely guarded introduction into combat, their growing importance in the Pacific, and their devastating employment against German forces during the Battle of the Bulge. Along the way, the book reveals how scientists, engineers, factory workers, sailors, and artillerymen transformed an improbable concept into a practical weapon of war. More than the story of an ingenious fuze, this book examines a turning point in the relationship between electronics and firepower. The proximity fuze demonstrated that information, sensing, and precise timing could multiply the effectiveness of existing weapons without increasing their explosive power. Largely overshadowed by radar, codebreaking, and the atomic bomb, its revolution remained almost invisible, yet its influence helped shape both the final years of the war and the technological world that followed.
