Project Advisory: The Success and Pitfall of Securing Financing for Mega Projects in Africa

Project Advisory: The Success and Pitfall of Securing Project Financing for Mega Projects in Africa is a practical guide to transforming ambitious infrastructure concepts into institutionally bankable projects.Drawing on project finance, quantity surveying, contract administration, construction management, and commercial advisory principles, Dr. Raphael Adeyemi examines why many African mega projects struggle to secure binding financing despite the availability of substantial global capital. The book explains how project sponsors and advisors can connect Front-End Engineering Design (FEED), CAPEX and OPEX planning, Special Purpose Vehicles, contractual risk allocation, CFADS, DSCR, Development Finance Institutions, Export Credit Agencies, commercial banks, private equity, political-risk insurance, ESG finance, and FIDIC-based construction controls into one integrated financing structure.Through practical frameworks, checklists, risk matrices, and project case studies, readers will learn how to: - identify the difference between a feasible project and a bankable project; - build limited-recourse financing structures around an SPV; - develop realistic CAPEX, OPEX, CFADS, and DSCR assumptions; - manage political, commercial, construction, currency, and interest-rate risks; - strengthen PPAs, concessions, EPC/EPCM arrangements, and lender security; - understand the roles of DFIs, ECAs, banks, infrastructure funds, and green finance; and - avoid the recurring failures that prevent mega projects from reaching financial close.Written for project sponsors, corporate executives, project managers, quantity surveyors, contract professionals, investors, financiers, policymakers, and infrastructure advisors, Project Advisory provides a structured roadmap from project concept to financial close. The central message is clear: Africa's infrastructure financing challenge is not simply a shortage of capital-it is the challenge of producing projects that meet institutional standards of bankability.
