An Annotated Plato Reader, with Introduction and Glossary by Laetitia Mouze, former student of the ENS (Ulm), agrégée in philosophy, high school teacher New. Due to be published in September 2001. This work presents Plato according to the major currents of his thought, not unmindful of the chronological sequence from the so-called Socratic dialogues through the major works of his maturity, his last logical treatises, and even the last oft-neglected dialogue of the Laws. The book is in three principal sections: - the first is entitled "the philosopher" and examines the manner in which Plato constructs this new figure, via the character of Socrates, in opposition to the sophists, and in various texts emphasizing the link between philosophy and government; - the second deals with "understanding" and notably considers the problematic status of "Platonic ideas" - the third, on "justice," identifies this notion as a central axis of Plato's thought, from the Apology of Socrates to the very last dialogue of the Laws. Justice must be fostered in man and in the city, which presupposed both understanding and a natural inclination to philosophy: the concept of justice thus permits a synthesis of the ensemble of questions on Plato. Several general presentations of Plato's thought exist, but no anthology of texts with commentary. Plato's published presence is confirmed by the new translation of his complete works by the publishing house Garnier-Flammarion since 1987.
