My Oil Demand Theory in Behavioral EconomicsFor my distinct analytical perspectives, approaches commodity markets-specifically petroleum and energy consumption-through a psychological and cognitive lens rather than relying strictly on classical neoclassical equilibrium models. While traditional economic theories view consumer and industrial demand for oil as a linear function dictated strictly by prevailing market prices, aggregate income, and immediate substitution effects, my demand theory incorporates behavioral anomalies, cognitive heuristics, and forward-looking sentiment loops. At the core of my oil demand framework in the United States is the concept of asymmetric psychological inelasticity coupled with sentiment-driven stockpiling. When evaluating how U.S. commercial and retail sectors react to crude oil price fluctuations, my view argues that traditional economists drastically underestimate the role of loss aversion and mental accounting. In conventional microeconomics, a sharp spike in gasoline or heating oil prices is expected to immediately compress consumer demand as buyers optimize their utility.
