This book presents the principles, design, control, and applications of modern power electronic converters, with particular emphasis on electric vehicle (EV) battery charging systems. It discusses the limitations of conventional AC-DC converters, including poor power factor, high input-current harmonics, and power-quality issues, and introduces advanced converter topologies for improved performance. A modified bridgeless Landsman converter is presented as a front-end power-factor-correction (PFC) stage, followed by an isolated flyback converter for regulated battery charging. The operating principles, circuit configurations, mathematical analysis, component selection, control strategy, and simulation methodology are discussed. The proposed charger employs discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), a voltage-follower PI control technique, and cascaded control for constant-current (CC) and constant-voltage (CV) charging. MATLAB/Simulink-based analysis evaluates input current, power factor, total harmonic distortion (THD), output voltage, and charging performance. A 48 V, 100 Ah EV battery charging system is considered, achieving a reported input-current THD of 4.3% and compliance with IEC.
