POST-CONFLICT REINTEGRATION AND DERADICALIZATION IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

This book critically explores the limitations of deradicalization and reintegration (DRR) strategies in Sub-Saharan Africa through case studies of Nigeria's Operation Safe Corridor and Somalia's Baidoa Transition Centre. Using a qualitative, comparative approach, it assesses how programs address both material needs and ideological radicalization. The findings highlight three key challenges: (1) most initiatives focus on financial aid, vocational training, and security, neglecting the ideological bonds to extremist groups; (2) reintegration efforts often fail due to a lack of genuine community acceptance, resulting in stigma and re-radicalization; and (3) the absence of long-term monitoring and reliance on secularized frameworks limits program flexibility. The study advocates for holistic, locally grounded models that incorporate psychological support, community reconciliation, and ideological disengagement to foster sustainable post-conflict recovery.
