Poetry, Even When

A small, exact epic in three movements, from near loss to new sight.Even When is compact and precisely built, a short book that behaves like an epic. It moves in three movements, from the edge of loss toward something like recovered sight, and it earns every step of that arc one plain, steadying refrain at a time.It asks what stays true when almost nothing else does. Dysfunctional animals. November nights. A snow cone. Families that lean on each other while the speaker watches from a colder distance and tries to find the door in. It is tender without softening, and it knows the difference.Together we're important. Alone we're afraid. It is the book to hand a reader who believes short poems cannot build to anything. This one builds, deliberately, and the three-part shape is doing quiet, real work. Every word is kept as composed, irregularities included, because the exactness is what makes a small book land like a large one.The three movements do what a good album does. The last poem means more because of everything you walked through to reach it.For readers who want emotional poetry with real structure, and anyone holding a family together across distance.Short enough to read in one sitting, built to stay with you far longer than that.
