This book elaborates a psychoanalytic understanding of the creative process in poets. It does so via a close reading of the author's work and that of other Anglo-Jewish writers. In addition to their obvious cathartic effect, poems (like dreams) involuntarily metabolise hidden anxiety. Troublesome diasporic experience can be shown to generate a distinctive vocabulary and sequence of linguistic tropes. The principal subjects are Jon Silkin, A.C. Jacobs, Dannie Abse, Michael Hamburger, Richard Berengarten, and Elaine Feinstein.
