Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a noninvasive therapeutic approach that combines a photosensitizing agent with a specific wavelength of light to generate reactive oxygen species, which in turn destroy microbial cells. In recent years, PDT has gained attention in dentistry as a potential adjunctive method for the management of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. It has been proposed for use in chronic periodontitis, peri-implantitis, and aggressive periodontitis, due to its ability to target and eliminate bacteria, fungi, and viruses without causing significant damage to the surrounding tissues.Although PDT shows promising antimicrobial properties, current scientific evidence remains insufficient to establish its superiority over conventional scaling and root planing (SRP) when used alone or in combination.
