Philosophy of Education

Education, like every academic discipline, is grounded in philosophical principles that shape its purpose, values, and practice. Drawing from Eastern, Western, and African traditions, this book examines how philosophical thought has influenced educational theories, policies, and teaching practices across cultures and generations. It explores the meaning and purpose of education, the major branches of philosophy-metaphysics, epistemology, logic, and axiology-and the contributions of influential thinkers such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, John Dewey, Paulo Freire, and Julius Nyerere. Organized into nine chapters, the book also highlights African philosophies of education, with special attention to Nyerere's philosophy of Education for Self-Reliance and lifelong learning in Tanzania.
