The Decalogue is the natural sequel to the "lives of the patriarchs," which constitute the unwritten laws of the Jewish nation. Accordingly, it must be carefully expounded and no allegorical meaning, which can be discerned lurking in it, passed over. The first question to be considered is, "Why was the Law given in the desert?" The answer is plain. Cities are full of untold evils, offences both against God and against man.
