Petroleum Origins: DO OIL FIELDS REFILL?

Petroleum Origins: The Abiotic Question examines one of the most persistent and controversial questions in petroleum science: Can hydrocarbons form without biology, and if they can, do they make a meaningful contribution to commercial oil and gas accumulations? The book separates three very different questions that are often blurred together: whether abiotic hydrocarbons can be created under relevant physical and chemical conditions, whether naturally occurring abiotic hydrocarbons exist on Earth, and whether a deep-Earth abiotic source contributes materially to a commercial petroleum accumulation.Drawing on laboratory high-pressure and high-temperature experiments, deep carbon research, serpentinization systems, mantle and crustal fluids, methane occurrences, noble gases, isotopes, basement reservoirs, deep faults, and field-scale petroleum systems, Book 2 tests each line of evidence against the same requirements for source identification, pathway, timing, reservoir connection, and mass balance.Cases including Chimaera, Panhandle-Hugoton, Qingshen, Siljan, basement-hosted reservoirs, and other frequently cited examples are examined without assuming that an unusual reservoir setting, deep fault, mantle tracer, or abiotic molecule automatically establishes the origin of a commercial petroleum accumulation. The evidence leads to an important distinction: abiotic hydrocarbon chemistry is real, and naturally occurring abiotic hydrocarbons are documented. What remains unestablished under the book's commercial-contribution standard is a quantitatively demonstrated, materially significant deep-Earth abiotic contribution to a commercial petroleum accumulation. The Abiotic Question does not ask readers to accept or reject a theory. It asks a harder question: What can the evidence actually prove?Written for petroleum professionals, engineers, geoscientists, students, researchers, and technically curious readers interested in deep carbon, petroleum origins, and the scientific evidence behind competing source hypotheses.
