The eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in particular the provinces of North and South Kivu, has been marked for several decades by persistent insecurity linked to the proliferation of armed groups, the economic stakes surrounding natural resources and complex regional dynamics. Against this backdrop of chronic crisis, local populations are developing a variety of survival and adaptation mechanisms to cope with the multiple forms of vulnerability. This book analyzes the strategies implemented by Kivu communities to maintain their social, economic and cultural existence despite the war. Using an analytical and contextualized approach, the study also examines the humanitarian, social and economic impacts of insecurity on populations, while assessing the responses of national authorities, international organizations and local actors.
