In many serious diseases, particularly those associated with aging, oxidative stress is the original triggering factor. On the other hand, in many other diseases, oxidative stress is secondary to the establishment of the pathology, but contributes to its comorbidities. It therefore seems important to clearly define the relationship between chronic diseases and oxidative stress, in order to better guide the therapeutic strategy of antioxidant molecules, which can act in the prevention of degenerative diseases when provided at an early stage before the onset of irreversible mechanisms, and in moderate doses, as basal production of free radicals is essential for many functions and should not be suppressed.
