Overqualified and Overlooked: Finding Hope, Purpose Career Direction beyond PhD

You earned the PhD. You did the research, made the sacrifices, and prepared yourself to contribute at a higher level. But what happens when the career you expected does not follow?Overqualified and Overlooked: Finding Hope, Purpose and Career Direction Beyond PhD is for doctoral graduates navigating the difficult space between academic achievement and professional reality.Whether you are underemployed, struggling to enter academia, repeatedly hearing that you are "overqualified," questioning your career direction, or simply wondering what comes next, this book offers a practical and hopeful way forward.Drawing from lived experience and research-informed career principles, Dr Matela explores how highly educated professionals can translate their expertise into professional value, rebuild their identity beyond an academic title, position themselves for new opportunities, develop meaningful professional relationships, and become more visible without losing authenticity. This book also challenges one of the most limiting assumptions surrounding doctoral education: that a successful career after the PhD must follow a single path.Inside, you will discover how to: - recognise and communicate the transferable value of your doctorate - reposition yourself for academic, professional and portfolio careers - respond constructively to rejection and being labelled "overqualified" - build relationships that create career possibilities - develop resilience without normalising burnout - move from waiting for opportunities to intentionally creating them - build a practical pathway from surviving to thrivingThis is not a promise of an easy career transition. It is an invitation to approach that transition with greater clarity, agency, resilience and hope.Your doctorate is an achievement-but it does not have to become the boundary around your future. There is life, purpose and possibility beyond the PhD.
