The author, Joe Sugarek, is a fifth generation Texan whose ancestors settled in South Texas in the mid-1800's. His maternal second great-grandparents, Reuben and Sarah Holbein, emigrated from England and were instrumental in the settling of Corpus Christi and the Wild Horse Desert.
